Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, taken from Frank Herbert’s science fiction saga, is one of the most anticipated 2021 films. And for good reason. With all the star actors and newcomers alike, film scores composed by someone other than Hans Zimmer, and a riveting space-opera strategy sure to create a new generation of hard-working fans, Dune is expected to be one of the biggest producers of the year.
The first book in Herbert’s series was published in 1965, and it stands as one of the most popular sci-fi novels. The entire Dune series looks at six books, many planets, and thousands of years. That’s a lot of ground cover. Thus, Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 film will prepare only the first part of the first novel and will be divided into two feature films.
Dune film As Dune fans ourselves here at Collider, we can’t wait to see our favourite things from novels playing on the big screen. In the meantime, we’ve covered everything we know about the film so far, from the release dates to the details of the actors, and added a few tips on what the audience can expect to see in the film.
The Dune Editor’s Note: This post was last updated September 5 to include the latest Dune news, including the first review of the Venice Film Festival.
Talk of Villeneuve’s Dune adaptation has been circulating for a while, but when the official trailer – featuring Hans Zimmer’s translation of Pink Floyd’s assassination – crashed in September 2020, the already established fandom (and myself) lost its mind.
After all, there is so much in the trailer for Dune fans to consider: the famous word “fear the killer-killer” by Timothee Chalamet, thousands of Sardaukar warriors descending from the sky, and a look at some of the world’s “Shai-Hulud” – great worms fearsome and revered on the planet Arrakis.
But that is not all! Warner Bros. released the second, more trailer in July 2021 which was full of new videos.
Short Stories The Dune Movie Getting Good Reviews?
Dune finally premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, which means we finally have some insight into what we can expect from this film from the people who saw it! Is Dune Good? Is it living according to the source of the content or is there something wrong with our hands? All in all, the reviews from Venice have been shiny, with fewer vendors.
Collider’s Steve Weintraub called the film “art,” which goes on to say, “Everything about Dune works. From Hans Zimmer’s AMAZING scenes to Greig Fraser’s cinematic to Bob Morgan and Jacqueline West’s beautiful costume. “You can see some of his thoughts and the first public response here.
The film currently sits at 85% of rotten tomatoes, and here are some examples of reviews:
Guardian: “Dune is dense, heart-burning and very frequent – the missing link closes the multiplex and arthouse.” The book also adds that the movie “tells us that large budget mirrors do not have to be dumb or very anxious, that it is possible to allow a strange place to be quiet in the middle of an explosion.”
Diversity: The publication called the film a “glorious and great look,” adding that “it was made for us, and sometimes it works, but it also wants to get under your skin like a strong mosquito poison. It does … until it does.”
Entertainment Weekly: “The magnitude of Villeneuve’s assassination – there may be no other film this year, or forever, that turns a character into a glass of water – a genre of psychedelic walloping – often obscures the fact that conspiracy, especially foreknowledge: without a fixed beginning or end. ”
Exit Time: Calling the film “broad, surprising and politically sensitive in its colonial analysis and exploitation”, the review added that not everyone can be patient the director wants in the movie, but those who do so “will be rewarded accurately for telling stories, explosives and building a world of excellence. ”
Wrap: “Vuneneuve’s Dune is amazing and tedious, often amazing and often slow-moving. Big and noisy and impressive but also may not be funny and blurry – though all, it sincerely tries to address the issues of Herbert’s complex role, which requires the director to spend a lot of time planning and defining the world before they can even remove this evil. ”
In the distant future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides embraced the rule of the archipelago Arrakis, also known as Dune, the only source of the most important object in the universe, “melange” (also called “spice”), a tree that extends human life, gives supernatural thinking, and make the movement faster than the light shines.
Although Letto knows that this opportunity is a complex trap set by his enemies, he takes his concubine Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, a young son and heir Paul, and the most loyal advisers to Arrakis. Letto controls the operation of spice mines, which is caused by the presence of a large caterpillar. A tragic betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert.
Short Stories The Dune Movie Background:
Shortly after its publication in 1965, Dune was identified as a great potential for filmmaking, and novel and film synchronization rights have been held by several producers since 1971. Many attempts to make such a film have been made, and it is considered a difficult task to adapt to the screen due to the breadth of content.
Notably, filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky had acquired rights in the 1970s to make a comedy book fourteen hours long, but the project failed. An attempt to make the film was later recorded in June June Jodorowsky’s Dune film. There have been two different adaptations made before the film: 1984 Dune by Raffaella De Laurentiis and directed by David Lynch, and 2000 services on the Sci-Fi Channel, produced by Richard P Rubinstein, who held Dune film rights from in 1996.
